Hello all!

I am currently doing some research on the topic of God, in view of writing a
book. I would like to have your personal definition of the word, as well as
to be able to exchange ideas about it or on closely related subjects.

For the people interested in talking about it, you can reach me at
***@shaw.ca

I would greatly appreciate if you could mention your religion or religious
denomination.

Discussing God or his/her existence or nature or whatever, is not
something Buddhists do as a general rule. Your lucky Julian was feeling
giddy today or you wouldn't have gotten any response from this sector.
;-)

Discussing the unfathomable is not going to give you or anyone else
peace of mind, or compassionate mind, or do anything spiritually
constructive for anyone, nor help you become a better person. It might
in fact create or deepen some negative and destructive states of mind.
Therefore Julian is wasting your time, as you are inadvertently and
innocently doing to us here on Buddhist usenet.

The Buddha also refused to discuss God or the nature of God. He
basically said it's like refusing to allow a doctor to remove an arrow
from your body until the doctor could tell you the name and complete
historical and personal details of the person that shot you. So don't
feel especially slighted by the non-answer you're getting.

If you go through the historical archives of Buddhist Usenet you will
find some discussions on the subject, but not in the way you're
probably used to seeing it discussed. And asking for a straightforward
discussion will get you...well, Julian, or worse. And that's the truth,
pilgrim.

My mom mentioned the other day she wished she could move things with
just her mind. I told her she already does, we all do. She disagreed,
saying she has to use her body. I told her to quit thinking with a lazy
mind. She laughed a little but the look like she was 2 seconds from
calling the folks to put me in a straight jacket never left her face.

Poor mom, she has no clue how to deal with me most of the time.

This is my view, written in my blog....

Intelligent-designed universe and God

Whether we live in an intelligent-designed universe or not, it does not
matter. If a vastly superior being created the universe for us to live
in, then it's good for them. If they (actually "they" are our
father and mother) do create these bodies for us, it does not mean that
they own us and have the ability to dictate our actions. We are not
puppets. We happened to live in this world, whether it was created or
not, because of our karma.

What is important isn't "God the Creator" concept or whether we
live in a universe designed by some intelligent beings, but the
realization of what lies beneath the ever changing universe of material
things, including ourselves. There is a nature that is unchanged,
unborn, and will never die, always at the present (no past or future as
it has no beginning or an end), the nature without self, "the
knowing". This "knowing nature" can't be touched by the
material world, regardless of whether the universe has been created by
some superior beings or not. It also can't be touched by any beings,
not even by God (if there is one). God is irrelevant.

The key is to get rid of our attachment to this everchanging material
world/ universe permanently, and become, needless to say, arahan.

Best,

Tikaviro
